Project for analyzing rescue requirements in the Polar Code

Status: Active

The NRC is working with partners to analyze the escape, evacuation and rescue requirements of the Polar Code to determine their effectiveness in increasing safety for ships operating in Arctic waters.

Objectives

  • Review the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code) to determine if its escape, evacuation and rescue requirements are sufficient and attainable

Deliverables

  • Provide an analysis of whether the escape, evacuation and rescue requirements in the Polar Code are effectively increasing safety for ships operating in Arctic waters
  • Provide an analysis of whether existing lifesaving appliances meet the Polar Code's performance requirements

Activities

  • Review the Polar Code and compare its recommendations against:
    • existing studies with documented estimated exposure time in Arctic locations
    • the performance of existing lifesaving appliances
  • Perform a gap analysis on the escape, evacuation and rescue recommendations in the Polar Code

Collaborators

Results

If the research indicates that the Polar Code recommendations are not realistic, suggestions will be made on how best to close these gaps and better increase the safety of ships operating in the Arctic.
