Canadian Security Materials Technologies Roadmap initiative

The Canadian Security Materials Technologies Roadmap (SMTRM) initiative is an industry-led strategic planning process, designed to foster development of innovative products and systems to meet future market demands.

Working with Canadian industry across the value chain, from constituents to end product systems, the SMTRM aims to accelerate innovation, competitiveness and productivity in Canada's security materials technology sector. By identifying future market demands in Canada and internationally, and the critical technologies that will be required to meet those demands, the SMTRM will help align, plan and coordinate technology development opportunities for Canadian industry and target R&D investments.

Development of the SMTRM is led by a Steering Committee comprised of industry leaders, with support from government and academia. These members offer expertise in security materials research and technology development as applied to next-generation personal protective equipment and armoured vehicle products. Members were selected based upon the merit of their applications, submitted in response to an open process that was advertised in 2014 and 2015 on BuyandSell.gc.ca.

About the SMTRM

The SMTRM is an initiative of the Security Materials Technologies (SMT) program. The SMT program will:

  • exploit the NRC's unique world-class capabilities in nano and composite materials, and structures technologies;
  • integrate DRDC's exceptional strengths in armour systems development and validation;
  • support industry to develop, validate and market world-leading, cost-effective personal protection equipment and armoured vehicles and improve future innovation capacity; and
  • provide enhanced protection systems for the Canadian Armed Forces, first responders, police and security personnel.
CSTRM vs SSTR

The SMTRM builds on the Soldier Systems Technology Roadmap (SSTR) development experience, but they are distinct.
