The NRC is committed to supporting our clients and collaborators with testing and technical services based on our unique research expertise and infrastructure. The NRC is equally committed to acting diligently to avoid knowingly engaging in routine testing services that may be delivered through Canadian private-sector laboratories offering such services. The NRC will endeavour to refer clients to Canadian private-sector labs when appropriate and will explore opportunities to license/transfer testing methodologies to Canadian private-sector service providers as circumstances warrant.

In Ottawa, NRC Aerospace conducts research on issues affecting the design, strength, durability, structural integrity and performance of new and legacy aircraft structures and components. We also develop new design, analysis, and manufacturing technologies for structures and materials, as well as for noise and vibration control. Technologies to support existing aircraft fleets are another area of study.

NRC Aerospace is involved in several programs that assess rotorcraft handling qualities, in co-operation with government, industry, and educational institutions. NRC Aerospace has the expertise to assess how new or modified equipment, new control augmentation laws/theories, or degraded flight conditions can affect the performance of the pilot and the aircraft. In many cases, these assessments require the development of novel test procedures and equipment as well as the instruction of evaluators in flight test techniques and evaluation methods.

The NRC's capabilities in bluff body aerodynamics are extensive and reach far beyond the study of the effects of wind on airplanes, bridges, buildings and vehicles. The NRC is also renowned for its sports aerodynamics testing. The NRC's expertise has repeatedly been called upon to assist Canada's Olympic Own the Podium initiative, complementing training with science and technology. Our research has yielded impressive results, helping Canadian athletes become faster and be their best.
