Microgrid testing and training facility

The National Research Council of Canada's Energy, Mining and Environment Research Centre is currently building a Microgrid test facility to accommodate a wide range of pre-commercial power generation and storage technologies. The first phase of integrated testing will begin in fall 2019.

Our capabilities

Our experts can connect your pre-commercial power generation and storage technologies to our system in order to operate them under a variety of real-world conditions.

Specific testing includes investigating the impacts of biomass feedstock quality, evaluating different power/energy configurations, simulating transient conditions and events, and performing accelerated lifetime testing to optimize the reliability of the system and components. After testing, the technologies can be safely disconnected to be relocated to remote locations for permanent installation.

Why work with us

Our unique facility is designed to incorporate the latest equipment to facilitate testing and research and development focussed on optimizing integrated system operations. Our equipment includes a biomass combined heat and power (CHP) system, a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, battery energy storage, and a diesel generator.

Our researchers have expertise in microgrid design and operation, mechanical/electrical engineering, bioenergy technologies, pilot testing and evaluation, instrumentation and controls, emissions monitoring and more.

Equipment

  • Biomass CHP unit (40kW of electricity and 100kW of heat)
  • Concentrating mirror solar PV system (10kW) and flat-panel PV system (10kW)
  • Diesel generator (80kW) – coming fall 2019
  • Battery system (50kW) – coming 2020
