Biography: Maria Aubrey


Vice-President of Special Projects and Special Advisor to the President, Biologics Manufacturing Centre Project

Maria Aubrey is the Vice-President of Special Projects. In addition, as the Special Advisor to the President, she is the executive lead for the Biologics Manufacturing Centre (BMC) Project, which includes delivery of a self‑contained Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) production facility dedicated to production of vaccines to address both the immediate COVID‑19 crisis and support a pipeline of "made in Canada" vaccines and biologics helping to accelerate Canadian innovation.

Before being appointed to these positions, Ms. Aubrey was Vice President, Business and Professional Services from May 2015 to July 2020. She also served as the NRC's Acting President from March to August 2016.

Prior to joining the NRC, she gained sound knowledge and appreciation of innovation within the government context as Senior VP Operations at Sustainable Development Technology Canada, a not‑for‑profit organization. In addition to providing management leadership in the day‑to‑day operations, in this role, she led a number of strategic initiatives to ensure solid governance and compliance with the organization's mandate, and was the lead for oversight of numerous audits and evaluations, all with a positive outcome.

In addition, Ms. Aubrey had an extensive career in the private sector, where she held progressive senior management positions including Senior VP Operations at AMEC Technologies and President of Spectrocan Ltd, which provided her with all aspects of leadership and business management experience, including the raising of capital and involvement in mergers and acquisitions.

She has had direct involvement with a large range of stakeholders including: different levels of governments, non‑governmental organizations, universities, investors, and industry (small and medium‑sized enterprises and large corporations) nationally and internationally. This has provided her with solid insights into the different stages in the innovation chain.
