Dr. Joel Martin provides strategic leadership for the NRC's digital and data-driven research. He leads national efforts in AI, machine learning, data science and digital technologies that support innovation across Canada's science and technology ecosystem.

He holds a PhD in computer science (machine learning) from the Georgia Institute of Technology and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Pittsburgh. Since joining the NRC in 1994, he has held several scientific and executive leadership roles in the Digital Technologies Research Centre.

Dr. Martin is recognized for his exceptional leadership, innovation and contributions to technology transfer and collaborative research. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and has taught computer science at the University of Ottawa and Carleton University.

Under his leadership, the NRC's digital research programs have achieved major results in AI and machine learning, data analytics, natural language processing, cybersecurity, medical and bioinformatics, and computer vision and graphics. His teams have advanced applications such as digital disease surveillance tools, now used worldwide, and technologies that promote and preserve Indigenous languages in Canada.

Dr. Martin has also spearheaded major NRC initiatives such as the Data Analytics Centre, the AI for Design Challenge program and the Multimedia Analytic Tools for Security program. These initiatives foster collaboration with universities, industry and other government departments.

As research director for the Canadian AI Safety Institute, Dr. Martin is helping to shape Canada's approach to trustworthy, safe and responsible AI. He works to ensure that AI technologies are developed and deployed to benefit Canadians while maintaining the highest standards of transparency, security and ethical integrity.
