The challenges facing Canadians today are complex. At the NRC, we believe that diversity in our workplace helps us look at problems from different perspectives, so that we see more options and possible solutions to create better opportunities for Canadians.

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented enormous challenges in research. Critically, in the middle of the global pandemic, some NRC women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) are contributing to do life-saving research on vaccines, therapeutics, personal protective equipment and testing and diagnostics. Others continue to advance knowledge in their respective fields, from astronomy, to metrology, photonics and more.

With this year's women in STEM campaign Turning Challenges into Opportunities, the NRC celebrates how the insight and ingenuity of these NRC women brings solutions to some of the most pressing issues facing Canadians today and furthers research excellence. These inspiring researchers have not only tackled the challenge at hand, but opened up doors to future opportunities in their field of study and beyond.

Celebrating the Success of Women in STEM Symposium: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

On February 11, 2021, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science provides an opportunity to celebrate the women in STEM who are advancing knowledge and solutions to address the socio‑economic challenges facing Canadians.

This virtual event for the federal science and innovation community included a keynote address, moderated scientific discussions and an e‑poster session.
