Geneviève Tanguay: Each year, the NRC now recognizes the contributions of women in STEM on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

[On a blue background, a panel appears in which Geneviève Tanguay is on a zoom call with 5 unidentified speakers, during the Symposium]

Geneviève Tanguay: Through our Symposium for federal employees in science and innovation, we honoured the research initiatives of women who help address some of Canada's current and future challenges.

[On a blue background, 5 new speakers from the Symposium appear. Those speakers disappear and are replaced by 4 new speakers from the Symposium, onscreen.]

Geneviève Tanguay: For this year's online Symposium, we gathered close to 1400 people,

[Geneviève Tanguay sits in her home, speaking to the camera.]

Geneviève Tanguay: and saw science posters from women across the federal government, from coast to coast.

[Several science posters from the Symposium are shown on the screen, in 3 columns. The text is not decipherable]

Geneviève Tanguay: And we welcomed some wonderful Canadian and international guest speakers,

[Blue slide with white and navy blue text describing the panel title and speakers. Expert Panel: Turning Challenges into Opportunities. Dr. Pascale Champagne, Scientific Director, Institut national de la recherche scientifique; Dr. Loydie Jerome-Majewska, Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, and Co-Founder, Canadian Black Scientists Network; Dr. Veronica McKinney, Director of Northern Medical Services, University of Saskatchewan College of Medicine; Dr. Veronika von Messling, General Director for Health Research, German Federal Ministry of Education and Research; Dr. Adam Simpson, Special Advisor, Policy, Programme and Intergovernmental Division, UN Women.]

Geneviève Tanguay: including Canada's Chief Public Health Officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, who shared her insights and inspiration for women in STEM:

[Dr. Theresa Tam sits in her home, speaking to the camera.]

Dr. Theresa Tam: Of course Ruth Bader Ginsburg would say, "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made." I do feel that I'm in a privileged position at this moment in time. But we need many more women to be in all these places where decisions are being made. And so, we do have a bit of work still cut out for us, to create the kind of environments that welcome participation and contributions of women in these extremely challenging, but extremely rewarding fields.

[Geneviève Tanguay sits in her home, speaking to the camera.]

Geneviève Tanguay: Over the last month we've also shared innovative work led by women in STEM at the NRC who are pushing the boundaries of science to help find solutions to our country's greatest socio-economic challenges. Today, on International Women's Day, I would like to take the opportunity to encourage you to watch and share these inspirational stories.

[5 images appear on screen. Each is a blue rectangle, with a white circle, in which a woman's face is featured. The women's names are written on the blue card. Clockwise from top-left, the names are: Karen Stoeffler, Catherine Proulx, Anh Tran, Kimberly Moore, Birgit Nielsen. Each card is enlarged, one-by-one, briefly, to highlight each researcher, then returns to normal size.]

Geneviève Tanguay: At the NRC, we value an inclusive workplace for all staff, which is why we've developed networking opportunities, mentorship and more, tailored to women in STEM. If you are interested in solving some of the challenges facing Canadians, consider joining us.

[Geneviève Tanguay fades away, and is replaced by a purple screen, with the text: www.nrc.canada.ca]
